Spain, 100mins, dir. Jaime Rosales

Goya-award-winning director Jaime Rosales (Solitary Fragments) returns with this affecting portrayal of two attractive and in love twenty-somethings helplessly caught amidst Spain’s economic crises. Natalia (Ingrid García Johnson) and Carlos (Carlos Rodríguez) dream of wealth, cars and holidays, and desperately search for ways of attaining these ideals in Madrid – even if this involves sacrificing their self-respect. There is no work for them, no matter how many CVs they send out, and they are infuriated by low-paying casual work.

As their relationship navigates its way through the digital age via cleverly filmed text and photo messages, whatsapps and skype calls, the question constantly lingers of when Natalia and Carlos will be able to actually start to enjoying their young lives.

Jaime Rosales spent three years in Cuba studying cinema at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) in La Habana, and later at Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) in Sydney, (Australia). He did several successful short films before his feature debut with ‘Las horas del día’ that received the FIPRESCI Award at Cannes film festival. In 2007 he filmed his second film, ‘La soledad’, for which he won the Goya Award for Best Director and Best Film.

His 2012 film Dream and Silence was selected to be screened in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Beautiful Youth’ was selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
